After completing your 2nd post, you are expected to comment on your LC members' 1st journal entry. You want to comment on 2 things you liked about their writing style or you can provide 2 suggestions on how to improve their writing style. Your comments should be about 2-4 sentences for each member.

Journal 1 - Character Choices

Remember no more than one person in each LC group can be the same character. If you were absent, you are still expected to do each post the night it's due. There is an audio version online and the link is on my project description. Also, if you were absent, be sure to contact members of LC group to find out who you are for journal writing.

Directions: To Kill A Mockingbird Journal Writing

You will write a one-page single spaced journal entry for each section of chapters for the novel. You will be in a group with 2-3 other students and are responsible for reading and commenting on each other's journals. Similar to the writing for Lord of the Flies , you will write about the events from the perspective of different characters. The book is told from the perspective of Scout, but you will write through the eyes of those around her.

For each post, you will be given a choice of characters and will decide in class with your LC group who will write for what character. No two people in your group can write from the perspective of the same character and you can't write from the perspective of the same character for two sections in a row.

Perspective: a person’s point of view; their opinions, beliefs and experiences.When writing from the viewpoint of a character include the following:• What they see during each section • What they feel about what is going on• What they say to the other characters• What they think about what happens during each chapter• How do they treat other characters? How do they feel about them?Most sections are made up of 3 or more chapters, so you have freedom to include all of the chapters or focus on one more closely. Include 5 of your vocabulary words from the assigned section in your writing and have them underlined.

Posting: You MUST follow the directions below or else your journal won't be graded.
Example: Journal #1- Chapters 1-3 from the perspective of Atticus (this must be your title for each post to make it easier for your group and your teacher to read and comment)
Remember to write in the first person for your journals, just like for Lord of the Flies.

The quotes that you choose to analyze and write about must pertain to one of the following questions:

3. What was the life/role of the characters in their home country?

4. What challenges do the characters face upon their arrival?

5. What hardships do the characters endure as they make a new life?

Format: Complete steps 1-4 for TWO DIFFERENT QUOTES

1. Quote, who said it, page number

2. Significance. 3-5 complete sentences explaining how it relates to one of the above questions. Must be specific! (No she, he, they, it, them, etc.)

3. Personal Connection. 2-3 complete sentences reflecting on your connections to the quote, story, etc. OR Character Judgement. 2-3 complete sentences describing the character, their actions and your feelings toward them. (Should be connected to your quote. Can’t use the same character twice)

4. Question: Pose one question per quote relating in some way to your quote for your group to answer.

Response Format: Visit one LC member for each response

Read their first quote and respond to their analysis and answer their question.

Blog Assignment #9

Chapter 9: A View to a Death

Due October 1st by 9PM

Who you are:

Summary: Simon awakes from his sleep after his conversation with his evil side, which came in the form of the Lord of the Flies. He has dried blood all over his body after being bitten from the flies. He leaves and sees the dead parachutist from a far, unafraid unlike the others, he goes right up to the dead body. Simon discovers that what everybody thought was the beast, was just a dead parachutist. He plans to go back to camp and let everyone know .

-Piggy convinces Ralph to attend Jack's feast at the other end of the island for some meat. When they go, they see that Jack is being treated by the rest of the boys as a type of idol. Jack orders a few hunters to give Piggy and Ralph some meat and they eat.

-Ralph attmepts to have an assembly, but no one listens. He tries to tell them that it's important to try to get rescued and they need Jack and the hunters help to keep the fire going. He is laughed at and made fun of by Jack and the hunters.

-It begins to rain furiously, Jack orders the group to do their ritual dance. They encircle Roger and pretend he's the pig. They are shouting their chant as it rains down on them.

-Simon crawls on all four as his legs gave out on him and comes to the middle of the circle. Simon tries to tell them about the dead body and that he's not the beast. He can't be heard b/c the boys are so loud with their chant, the rain is so loud, and they are in the evil trance. The boys mistake him for the beast and begin poking, grabbing, and eventually killing him. During the killing the boys became animal/beast like not saying anything, but just clawing at Simon.

-Finally, they all back away and see that it wasn't a beast and it was only Simon. At the sametime, the parachutist falls from the mountain top with his parachute and flies on top of the boys as the wind drops the dead body in the sea.

-Once again, Simon wise words were ignored, he was the only boy who saw things as they really were.

Blog Assignment #8

Directions: Write in the perspective of your character. Remember to type your entry on a word document and paste it on to blogspot. The length should be 3-4 paragraphs.

Chapter 8: Gift for the Darkness
The news of the beast has the entire camp in an uproar as they gather on the beach.
-Jack tells the others that there is definitely a beast on the mountain and goes on to claim that Ralph is a coward who should be removed from his leadership role.
-The other boys, however, refuse to vote Ralph out of power. Enraged, Jack storms away from the group, saying that he is leaving and that anyone who likes is welcome to join him.
-Ralph slips into a depression, but Piggy cheers him up with an idea: they should build a new signal fire, on the beach rather than on the mountain.
-Jack gathers his new tribe and declares himself the chief. In a savage frenzy, the hunters kill a sow brutally.
- As Piggy and Ralph sit in the old camp discussing the deserters, the hunters from Jack's tribe descend upon them, shrieking and whooping. The hunters steal burning sticks from the fire on the beach.
-Just before Jack's tribe raids the beach, Simon slips away from the camp and returns to the jungle glade where he previously sat marveling at the beauty of nature. Now, however, he finds the sow's head impaled on the stake in the middle of the clearing.
-The head speaks to Simon in the voice of the “Lord of the Flies,” ominously declaring that Simon will never be able to escape him, for he lies within all human beings. He also promises to have some “fun” with Simon. Terrified and troubled by the apparition, Simon collapses in a faint.

Chapter 7: Shadows and Tall Trees

Summary of Chapter 7:

-Jack and Ralph lead the boys to the top of the mountain to find the "Beast". On their journey, Ralph begins to reminisce about his life back home. Simon stops him and they have a conversation and Simon tells him that he'll get back where he came from.

-It is getting late, Simon volunteers to go back to camp and let Piggy and little ones know that the rest will continue their journey to the mountain.

-Jack convinces Ralph that they should hunt for awhile to eat. They see a boar and try to capture it, but it escaped. Ralph was able to jab it and was excited from the thrill of the hunt. The boys relive the scene and pretend that Robert is the boar. They encircle him and begin grabbing at jabbing him, even Ralph was involved. They chanted: "Kill the pig, cut his throat, kill the pig, bash him in." They all begin to discuss various ceremonial traditions that they should start doing after killing a pig, such as having a drum. Ralph begins to lose focus of why they are all there. He soon comes out of his trance and shouts that they need to go find the beast.

-As they near the top of the mountain, only Jack, Ralph, and Roger go to the top because the rest were too frightened. They see the pilot and think it's a beast and they lower their spears and run frantically down the mountain in fear.
